Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
This project aims at improving living conditions, health and household incomes through providing water and sanitation infrastructures/hardware as well as hygiene awareness. We provide rain water harvesting tanks, water filters, cement jars, soaps, latrines and improve existing wells to comply with the Ministry of Rural Development standards and ensure access to water throughout the year. We also form water and sanitation user groups and WASH committees to ensure sustainability and dissemination of hygiene awareness. We also organize village campaigns such as “hand washing day” and “Community Led Total Sanitation” (CLTS), the latest is aimed at improving sanitation awareness and encouraging villagers to contribute local resources to build latrines.
Water infrastructures
A good irrigation system is vital to both efficient farming and (together with water filter facilities) the health of the community. This is especially true during the dry season when droughts have been identified as one of the main reasons for rural migration. READA is addressing this issue through two initiatives:
- Community-wide irrigation systems: such as canals, public ponds, dams and domestic/on-farm water supplies (wells and family ponds)
- Water resource management: READA’s staff facilitates the formation of Water User Committees. These committees (created from water user groups) manage the irrigation systems and their technical maintenance, therefore ensuring the sustainability of the project.
The water & sanitation project: activities are similar to the ones presented above and aim at providing water (for household consumption and agriculture) and sanitation infrastructures/hardware. This project’s main difference is that infrastructures/hardware are funded by individual donors.
